Visual Sclerotherapy
Visual Sclerotherapy is a procedure used for treating spider veins and small varicose veins. It involves injecting a solution (sclerosing agent) which helps close off the vein. The procedure is proven to be safe and effective. The injected solution causes the vein to collapse. The blood vessel will scar off and eventually heal. The patient will experience minimal pain during the procedure with a minimal recovery time period.
Who Is a Candidate for Visual Sclerotherapy?
Patients suffering from spider veins or varicose veins are eligible for the procedure unless you are pregnant. During your consultation, Dr. Ramanath will examine your health status and medical history to determine your eligibility for the procedure.

The Visual Sclerotherapy Procedure
Before the procedure, Dr. Ramanath will advise you on the medications you need to avoid. Also, do not apply any lotion to your leg prior to the procedure. Discuss with your physician if you need to take antibiotics or herbs.
During the procedure, a sclerosing solution will be injected directly into your vein, using a fine needle. The procedure takes 30 minutes.
The number of veins which will be injected in a single appointment will depend on the size and location of the affected veins. This procedure is performed in our office.
After the procedure, Dr. Ramanath may place a small bandage in the treated areas if needed. Follow up treatments will then be determined.
Recovery
There is minimal recovery needed from this procedure. You will be able to drive yourself home after the procedure and can resume activities. We will ask you to avoid intentional sun tanning and prolonged exposure to sun light.
Side Effects and Potential Risks
Possible side-effects you can experience after the procedure include itching, allergic reaction, redness, bruising, mild pain, swelling, or discomfort. You may be asked to apply vitamin E lotion to the treated areas.
